Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for some of the more commonly asked questions, if you need more information please call or email us.

  • What is the process for preparing my accounts and tax return?

At the beginning of each financial year (1 April), we will email you a link providing access to our online questionnaires page. This page can also be found on this website under the services tab. After downloading and completing the relevant questionnaires that apply to you and your business, you are then required to email your completed questionnaire(s) to the team at admin@aafl.nz.

Once we have received your questionnaire(s) and any required supporting documentation you have sent us, we will then begin working on your accounts. If we require any additional information while working on the accounts, we will inform you. We make every effort to get your accounts processed in the quickest time possible without sacrificing accuracy and professional quality.

After we have completed your accounts, we will send you a final copy for your signature. Then, we will file the tax return with the IRD.

  • Why do I need to fill out the questionnaire every year?

At the end of each financial year, we require all clients to fill out and sign the questionnaire form. This is to ensure that you include all the relevant information that we need to complete your financial statements as things may have changed over the year.

When the questionnaire is signed, it gives AAF permission to work on your accounts which is a requirement by IRD and needs to be done on a yearly basis.

  • Will you deal with Inland Revenue for me?

Yes, as your trusted accounting firm, we will handle all communications and interactions with the Inland Revenue on your behalf, ensuring your tax matters are managed efficiently and effectively.

As part of our service we will remind you of any IRD payment and return deadlines coming up, and we will deal with any issues that come up with the IRD.

  • What types of services do you offer?

We offer a range of services tailored to small businesses or contractors with many industries. From assistance with budgets, cash flow forecasting and business valuations, we can offer advice in all areas, giving you confidence in business.

Refer to our services drop down menu for more information.

  • Do I need to register for GST?

If you have earned or will earn more than $60,000 in a 12 month period then you need to register for GST. The exception to this is if you are only exceeding this threshold because you are selling capital items to replace existing assets, or selling capital items because you are winding down or ceasing business activity.

  • What accounting software do you use?

We use Xero Accounting Software and are proud Platinum Partners.

Xero is affordable, user friendly, cloud based and intuitive.  It has lots of functionality packed into it and being cloud based means that AAF can access the software to help and advise when required.  We’ll also process your end of year accounting work in Xero so there is no duplication, and no annual “alignment journals” required.

  • Can I see you for other business advice? Do you do business planning?

YES! Many businesses get their accounts and can see how their business performed in the year that has already been. You know it is too late to look at improving last year and that you should take the time to create your business plan but you keep putting it off because you don’t know where to start, have never needed one before or just don’t know when you will find the time. The most successful businesses are run by people who plan ahead, set targets and know where they are going. We are able to help you with this. We want your business to be successful and will assist you in preparing a business plan. Most people find it much easier to do this when they have an appointment and have someone to guide them through the process. Clients are often surprised about how little time this can take and the difference it makes to their business to have up to date information at hand. We can also provide you with monthly management reports and/or meet with you to discuss your progress. It can be very advantageous to have a monthly budget vs. actual comparison report to keep a close track on how you are going and give you the opportunity to act quickly to remedy any problem areas that may arise.

  • Do I need an accountant? What do I bring to the first free interview?

If you are in business or starting in business, want to grow your business, are starting or looking after a trust or have asked yourself any of the questions on our Services page then the chances are that we can help you. The first interview with us is free, confidential and there is no obligation to join our firm. If you are not sure whether you may need an accountant we suggest you make an appointment with us to discuss your business and where you are at. In order for us to see how we can best assist you, we will ask you to complete the applicable parts of our client questionnaire and bring it with you.
